Signet ring stone contrasting engraving

Signet Ring with Black Onyx: Some people think that a black onyx stone in a signet ring is too dark and therefore choose a layered stone (with contrasting top and bottom layer). But others consider the onyx engraving to be very elegant in its subtleness. What do you think?
